University Education was institutionalised in Angola with the creation of The General Studies of Angola integrated to the Portuguese System (Law-Decree 44530, dated 21st August 1962).
In December 1968, The General Studies University of Angola was changed to University of Angola, Law-Decree 48790 (dated 23rd of December). The University of Angola was created in 1976, a year after Angola had become an independent country (Decree 77-A/76, dated 28th of September).
On January 24th 1985 the former name changed to Agostinho Neto University in memory of the first President of Angola who also was the first Rector of the University after the independence as determined by Decree /85 from CDS (Government Gazette nº9- Series I, dated 28th January 1985).
UAN started exercising democracy practice in 1997 with the first elections for the Rector and Deans of Faculties. The elected Rector was Professor Laurinda Hyoogard, PHD.
The current UAN Rector Professor Engineer João Sebastião Teta, PHD was for the first time elected on 9th January 2002 (2002-2006) and re-elected on 17th November 2005 for a four years period (2006-2010).
Currently, Agostinho Neto University is implemented in 10 of 18 provinces of the country with 7 Faculties, 6 Higher Learning Education Science Institutes, 1 Higher Institute of Nursing (Luanda); 3 Higher Institutes, namely: Faculty of Sciences (Luanda), Faculty of Law (Luanda), Faculty of Economics (Luanda), faculty of Engineering (Luanda), Faculty of Health Sciences (Luanda), Higher Institute of Nursing (Luanda), Higher Institute for Teacher Training (Luanda), Faculty of Letters and Social Sciences (Luanda), Faculty of Earth Sciences (Huambo), Higher Institute for Teacher Training (Lubango), Higher Institute for Teacher Training (Benguela), Higher Institute for Teacher Training (Huambo), Higher Institute for Teacher Training (Cabinda), Higher Institute for Teacher Training (Uíge), Higher Teaching Institute (Lunda-Norte), Higher School of Technology Sciences (Lunda-Sul), Higher School for Sciences and Technology (Namibe) and University Nucleus of Kwanza-Sul (Sumbe).
In the academic year 2005/06, 68 licensing courses were ministered by Agostinho Neto University, being 18 in Bachelor’s Degree and 15 in Master’s Degree involving various areas of scientific knowledge within the various faculties, institutes and higher learning schools.
